After his academic achievements, he underwent residency training in Orthopedic Surgery in Halifax. As an orthopedic surgery resident, he successfully obtained research funding for a basic science project in cancer immunotherapy. Dr. Costain’s research interests include using tranexamic acid for hip fractures (with peer-reviewed grant funding of $50,000), bone grafts in orthopedic surgery, and computer-assisted surgery. He is a member of the Canadian Arthroplasty Society, Canadian Orthopaedic Association, Canadian Medical Association, and Nova Scotia Medical Association. He has served as an ATLS instructor and a member of the American Arthroscopy Association of North America, New Brunswick Medical Association, and the Canadian Society for Immunology.
