Art Gallery of Alberta has acquired more than 6,000 pieces, most of which were created after 1950 and added to the collection. The strength of the gallery's contemporary collection lies mainly in the field of abstract painting and sculpture in Canada, with a heavy focus on the artists' work. Acquisitions also included significant works by Alberta contemporary artists Catherine Burgess, Allen Ball, Chris Cran, Clay Ellis, Douglas Haynes, and more. The Gallery is also continuing to draw on the Collection's strengths through acquisitions by renowned Canadian artists. A diverse array of foreign collections complements the rich collection of historical and contemporary Canadian artists of the Art Gallery of Alberta.
