We went to see if we could see any Great Blue Heron during nesting season. Be aware that some of the trails are closed at this time for sake of the Heron nesting. We were not able to see many, only a few in flight. However there is plenty of trails to explore nature otherwise. We saw a variety of birds and even a chubby little rabbit. We heard and searched for a few woodpeckers working away at trees. Well worth the drive out on a nice day to explore.

The drive from Port Coquitlam is fairly long but the trip is worth it. They have recently revamped the parking lot to allow for more cars and buses. There is an outhouse at the beginning of the trail. The trail starts of fairly flat and takes you over a bridge and then begins it's ascent up. The trail is well marked but quite steep. There are lots of spots to stop and catch your breath as well as take pictures.

50311 Elk View Road, Chilliwack, BC V4Z 1A5

Forest Area, Trail Running, Outdoor Activities, Mountains, Hiking Trails, Dog Walkers, Nature & Parks

Offer a spectacular view of Chilliwack, Cultus Lake & the surrounding Fraser Valley area - The first viewpoint comes 1 hour and 20 minutes after hiking uphill

I love Elk Mountain because it is quick and rewarding enough that you can do it in a couple of hours before or after work and get on with your day. The views of the valley below are amazing. I have been there when there is snow at the top in May and June. This hike is kind of segmented into two parts by a logging road. If you bring dogs make sure to bring water as after you pass the first segment there are no more creeks on the hike.
