This landmark is the city's oldest structure and a recognized Municipal Heritage Site, and has survived multiple moves, renovations, and changes in ownership. Today, this former Hudson's Bay Company building symbolizes Nanaimo's history. In addition, group tours of the Bastion are available for booking during the off-season.

2025 Update: The Bastion is a wooden fort with historic artifacts displayed inside and a daily cannon-firing ceremony.
