“Spirit Catcher is made of COR-TEN steel and has 16 kinetic quills. Spirit Catcher is a focal point on the Barrie waterfront. The antennae and quills have been redesigned to provide the sculpture's structural integrity. The Spirit Catcher became the first work in the MacLaren Art Centre's permanent collection and remains the centre's most significant piece. The installation of the sculpture began a drive to place numerous pieces of art around the city, which continues to this day. The sculpture serves as a rendezvous point and navigational aid for the city's travellers and citizens. In addition, visitors can take advantage of the bay's spectacular view from atop this metal sculpture, a prominent piece of Barrie art and culture

2025 Update: The 20-ton, 25 m (70 ft) wide by 21 m (65 ft) tall sculpture was transported to Barrie using 2 flatbed trucks and was installed by volunteers and 2 cranes. Spirit Catcher is a sculpture situated on the shore of Kempenfelt Bay in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. It was created by sculptor Ron Baird for Expo 86 in Vancouver, British Columbia.”
