He is the principal investigator of the Canadian Fabry Disease Initiative, a multi-centre national study of enzyme replacement therapy in Fabry disease.

2025 Update: He is a professor of medicine and assistant dean of research for clinical trials at Dalhousie University. Dr. Michael L. West is a past president of the Canadian Society of Nephrology. He is a clinical nephrologist and the founder and director of the Nova Scotia Fabry Disease Program. He runs a weekly clinic for patients with Fabry disease. Dr. Michael L. West is the chair of the Scientific Committee of the Canadian Fabry Disease Initiative (CFDI) Registry. He served as the nephrology division head and a member of the Department of Medicine Executive Committee for six years.
