ST PATRICK'S BASILICA
281 Nepean Street, Ottawa, ON K1R 5G2 DIRECTIONS
Since 1855
Here’s The Deal:
St. Patrick's Basilica is one of the oldest English-speaking Catholic churches in Ottawa. The church was established in 1855, but its history goes far further back than that. The construction of the present church began in 1868. The initial planner was Augustus Laver of the Fuller and Laver company, the East and West Blocks architects of the Parliament Buildings. Throughout the long run of the building, the initial plan has changed considerably. In 1872, the foundation stone was blessed by Bishop Guigues, the first bishop of Ottawa, and laid by Sir John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada. In the beginning, St. Patrick's had the pastoral care of all the English-speaking Catholics in Ottawa and across the river in Hull. Gradually, as the Catholic population grew, new parishes were founded, and the area of Saint Patrick reduced. St. Patrick's Basilica is made of local stone in Gothic style, and it has double aisles and a short transept.
