“The Heintzman House is one of the oldest buildings in Thornhill-Markham, Ontario. It is located 12.2 km downtown from Markham, ON. The Heintzman House's original structure was an example of an early mudhouse and is on record as the earliest built in the province. It was constructed with adobe brick, fired brick and frame construction. The central five bays of the current structure are believed to have been incorporated into the existing house, which has seen several additions and changes over the past many years. The Heintzman House Auxiliary, many of whose original members were involved in the campaign to save the house from demolition, plays an important role in its upkeep and, since 1971, has organized an annual craft show fundraiser with proceeds going to the refurbishment of the house. A board of directors appointed by the City of Markham manages the Heintzman House.”

“Markham Civic Centre is adjacent to an 11.5-hectare park with a large pond that reflects the south facade of the building. A significant artwork, themed around a skeletal town hall with an attached bell, is located on the east side of the Town Centre. Markham Civic Centre is a functional building featuring the Great Hall and Lower Atrium, providing office space and numerous public spaces for special occasions and meetings. The Snow and Ice Festival held at the hall showcases the talents of local and Chinese artists. Markham Civic Centre offers several outdoor event facilities within its premises.

2025 Update: A reflecting pond is located on the south side of the building alongside a 26,000 square foot skating rink, the largest outdoor refrigerated skating rink in the GTA, and is operated in the winter months. The skating rink was constructed and officially opened in December 2011. Located next to the civic centre is the Markham Theatre and Unionville High School.”

MARKHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY REVIEWS

The library was very clean,you can find a lot of things you like and if someone else has the book you want you can do place hold and they'll send you an email when it comes back. So I loooooooove it!

Clean, Organized shelves, books from a gamut of genres to choose from , lot of computers, ample parking space, couple of meeting rooms, clean washrooms, wifi, and musical instrument lending !! This library has it all.. !!

This is a nice library! They even have musical instruments you can check out. Good variety of books.

THE HEINTZMAN HOUSE REVIEWS

Our son and future daughter in law looked around for a while before closing the Heintzman House for their wedding and reception venue and we are all so happy they did. There are various understandable restrictions since it’s a very old house and in a residential neighborhood, such as no open flames and no loud music or food/drink outside. There was an on site person who was very helpful in last minute coordination with getting tables and chairs and a podium set up. There are some lovely rooms upstairs for the wedding party to use to get ready - especially nice for the bridal party. We held the ceremony outside on the patio with about 110 chairs facing an arch in front of the piano sculpture. The grounds are very nice and so the wedding party pictures could be taken right there. We had about 100 people inside for a catered reception (no cooking allowed on site) using round tables in the large room. We then were able to fairly quickly clear the room and use it for dancing the rest of the evening. Overall the house is really great for such events and I would certainly recommend it to others.

What a wonderful piece of history. Everything seems quite original. The young man taking care of the place was very informative and very helpful. We had a small luncheon there… They supplied the room… What a nice atmosphere I would definitely go there again.

Had an amazing experience for my sister’s wedding - Such a classic heritage mansion. Especially loved the outside lights at night, upstairs bedrooms to get ready, balcony experience, and staff service ..

Incredible! Moved here recently and it has been spectacular. Everyone is so friendly and the City Of Markham addresses the problems of resident. Lower taxes, well maintained neighborhoods, and diversity.

Very nice government building. I was here to attend the wedding ceremony. I am impressed by the beauty of this architecture.

A beautiful place for walks, especially enjoyed the evening stroll and sunset view. Waiting and look forward to the cherry tree blooms.
