Dr. Malak Abu Shakra is a Clinical Psychologist registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. She earned her Ph.D. degree from McGill University. Her doctorate research focused on studying the brain and psychiatric conditions, specifically the neurofunctional reflections of risk for disordered alcohol use and anxiety. She held positions at the Jewish General Hospital’s Teenage Health Unit and Goldman Herzl Family Practice Centre, Montreal General Hospital’s Pain Clinic, and Royal Victoria Hospital’s Allan Memorial Institute. She then worked in different private practices in Toronto and Oakville, Ontario prior to opening her own. She works with adolescents and adults. She is intensely passionate about working with survivors of childhood abuse and narcissistic abuse, especially those who are now parents and wish to break the generational cycle and not pass on their wounds to their children. This passion was spurred by her own experience as a young parent, who found therapy extremely helpful in working through the chronic shame and emotional baggage that childhood trauma can activate in people, especially new parents. She is additionally highly experienced in working with individuals struggling with alcohol and substance abuse, anger management, anxiety, complex trauma, grief, infertility, and interpersonal relationship problems. She also provides support to individuals going through difficult life transitions, feeling stuck in life or struggling to find a sense of meaning. She has worked with gifted individuals, competitive athletes, and members of the LGBTQ community. She is known for her ability to listen deeply, and pay attention to what matters to her clients. Her sessions are basically conversations, unique conversations where clients are empowered to take a deep and honest look at their past and present, and to think of how they might want for things to change so that they are living authentically and no longer disempowered by their vulnerabilities.
